Michael Atkinson, born in Lubbock, Texas in 1946, is a self-taught artist whose journey began in his northwest Texas hometown. Despite initially pursuing a degree in architecture from Texas Tech University, Atkinson's true passion for painting emerged during a transformative summer in California in 1974. Since then, he has dedicated himself fully to his craft, honing his skills and captivating audiences with his distinctive style.

Atkinson's artistry is characterized by his meticulous attention to composition, where he seamlessly integrates the paper itself into his designs. He draws inspiration from his childhood memories of the American West, infusing his works with architectural elements, people, and animals. His mastery of watercolor allows for spontaneity and freedom, as he expertly manipulates texture, color density, and light-dark contrasts to create mesmerizing visuals.
